Core Editing Commands

There are 9 core editing commands in SKY Index. These are the commands that you're most likely to use frequently and are therefore assigned to function keys so that they can be executed with a single keystroke. The core editing commands are:

Command

Shortcut

Swap - Swaps the current heading with its parent heading.

F4

Promote - Promotes the current heading and all of its subordinates up one level in the hierarchy. The current heading's text is appended to the parent heading's text with a leading comma and space.

F5

Demote - Demotes the current heading and all of its subordinates down one level in the hierarchy. If there is a comma in the heading, only the text after the comma is demoted and the comma is deleted. If there is no comma, the whole heading is demoted leaving an empty heading at that level.

F6

Combine - The same as Promote except that the promoted text is appended to the parent heading's text with a single space.

F7

Select Heading - Selects all records that have the same heading text as the currently highlighted heading and have the same parent headings.

F8 (Data Entry View Only)

Select Entry - Selects all records that have identical headings at every level. This has the effect of collecting all locators for a particular entry.

F9 (Data Entry View Only)

Shift Left to Main - Moves the currently highlighted heading up to the Main heading level. All subordinate headings are moved up an equal amount.

F10

Shift Left - Moves the currently highlighted heading and all subordinate headings up one level.

F11

Shift Right - Moves the currently highlighted heading and all subordinate headings down one level opening up a blank heading at the current heading's level.

F12

All nine of these commands allow you to add two modifiers that enhance the command’s action. The modifiers are:

Ctrl – Instructs SKY Index to duplicate the record or records you wish to edit before editing them. This leaves an unaltered copy of the original index entries behind.

Ctrl+Shift – With this modifier, SKY Index will duplicate the records, but in addition, will create a group out of the duplicated and edited records when the edit is finished. This allows you to manipulate those records further without worrying about affecting the rest of the index.
